Does your hat finally burn in Europe too? Or does the European Union, which is rightly proud of its values, finally wants to give up on the issue of refugee and migration problems? The flames in the camp on the Greek island of Lesbos shed a dazzling and shameful light on the agony of many governments on the mainland. Action would now be the order of the day.
As for the facts: the Moria camp was planned for 2,800 people; more recently, 12,600 refugees and / or migrants had to wait there. Not only in intolerable hygienic conditions. And now Corona is added. International organizations and NGOs have been pointing out the catastrophic situation for years. But only a handful of European countries were willing to accept a few dozen unaccompanied minors; Austria, by the way, was not.
The number of migrants fell
The “pull factor” would be too great, they say as a reason. It is possible that with this measure some more people are heading to Europe. But, firstly, this has not been proven, and secondly, the number of migrants has decreased dramatically recently: from January to April, 164,000 asylum applications were submitted in the EU, compared to 221,000 in the same period of the year. previous. A glance at 2019 shows that this is not just due to the crown. There were 676,250 registered asylum applications in the EU, only about half compared to 2016. This number would be absolutely manageable for the EU-27: it corresponds to only 0.15 percent of the EU-27 population (450 million) . To speak of an “avalanche of asylum seekers” is pure demagoguery.
Objective the debate
Europe certainly cannot welcome all the world’s refugees and migrants. But the debate, and that really has nothing to do with “benefactors”, must be taken to the factual level, which includes two central points: The aging continent needs influx, whether you want it or not (just one keyword: careful). And people who have no prospects in their home country just come. On-site help that is cited often takes at least a generation.
Don’t leave Feld to the populists
That is why a unified European policy was finally needed and, above all, solidarity on this issue. But sadly, you are miles away. The topic of migration is a great way to attract votes. Populists of all stripes, some of whom are now in the levers of power, play this keyboard to perfection.
But does Europe, the continent of the Enlightenment and humanism, want to sacrifice its values on the altar of nationalist and myopic politics? I hope not.
Moria, formerly an eyesore, is now a monument to decisive action.
