German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas called for swift support for Greece. “This also includes the distribution of refugees to those who are willing to admit them to the EU,” the SPD minister wrote on Twitter on Wednesday.
The possible distribution of immigrants arriving in countries like Greece, Italy or Spain to other EU countries has already sparked heated discussions in the past. Many countries reject this in principle, including Austria.
First commitments
As the first country today, Norway, which is not a member of the EU, said it was ready to receive 50 people from the destroyed Moria camp, preferably families with children. The Berlin Senate also promised to host 300 people. North Rhine-Westphalia wants to bring 1,000 people from Lesbos.
EU Interior Commissioner Ylva Johansson also promised first aid. She agreed to fund the immediate relocation and placement of the remaining 400 unaccompanied children and youth on the Greek mainland, she tweeted. “The safety and security of everyone in Moria is a priority.”
