Thiem passes the test against Auger's aliases brilliantly

Austrian Dominic Thiem successfully completed the challenge posed by young Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime and reached the 2020 US Open quarter-finals. Second-seeded Thiem, who has now slipped into the role of tournament favorite for the Disqualification of Novak Djokovic, he more and more clearly imposed the number 21 in the world ranking and won with 7: 6 (4), 6: 1, 6: 1.

A short first sentence and then a review

Thiem, 27, finally handled the pressure situation at this event with confidence, which had changed since yesterday. In the first set, the game was still fought, Thiem and his opponent worked hard from the baseline and each came to a break. In the end, it was just a few points that decided the set in the tiebreaker for world number three.

However, with sets deficit, more and more turmoil and malaise came into play for the talented 21-year-old Canadian, who is seen by many as one of the best hard court players of the medium-term future. Auger-Aliassime got a bit bogged down in choosing his means, he wasn’t really sure if he should design the game entirely through powerful baseline rallies or rather take the flight forward in the form of network attacks. Thiem, on the other hand, now confidently played the best tennis from his previous tournament.

Thiem flees from the Canadian

In sets two and three, there were phases where Thiem completely dominated the game and scored several points wins that clearly put him on the path to victory. After a relatively short two hours and nine minutes, the game, which in the last two sets was a lesson for the youngest player on the field, was already over.

The next young challenger is already waiting

Thiem now meets another young challenger. Alex de Minaur (ATP 28) of Australia, who also won his round of 16 against Vasek Pospisil of Canada in three sets, is just 21 years old.
