The 40-year-old hiker from Germany did not show up as agreed after a two-day mountain tour in the Karwendel Mountains near Hinterriß (Schwaz district). His wife reported him missing on Saturday around midnight. A search operation on Sunday had to be canceled due to bad weather conditions. The search for the missing person finally continued on Monday.
During a flight over the flanks of the Vomperloch, the helicopter crew suddenly discovered something bright blue, the ORF reported. Mountain rescuers rappelled down and found the missing person’s backpack. Emergency services immediately began searching the immediate area and discovered the German in a pine forest.
The mountaineer had taken refuge under the mountain pines for two days. He got lost several times on the tour. The man only responded weakly and extremely exhausted, said Alfred Walenta of the Schwaz Mountain Rescue Service. The 40-year-old man was immediately taken to Schwaz Hospital. During the descent to the Vomperloch, the mountaineer had deliberately left his backpack on the rocks as a sign of life.
