Study: one in four people has an immigration history

Even before the integration report is officially presented on Tuesday, the responsible ministry announced the most important details in advance.

Therefore, the proportion of the population with a migratory background has increased dramatically in Austria over the last decade. Today, almost a quarter of the Austrian population, 2,070,100 people, either immigrated themselves or have immigrant parents. This value means an increase of around 35 percent compared to 2010.

This is due, among other things, to the 2015 refugee movement. Since then, around 118,000 people have received protection, roughly the same as the population of Klagenfurt, as emphasized by the Ministry of Integration.

This development is also reflected in schools. The proportion of students with non-German colloquial language has risen from 17.6 percent in 2010 to 26.4 percent in 2019. The Corona crisis is also having a dramatic impact on the job market. The unemployment rate of foreigners was 74.2 percent higher in June 2020 than in June 2019, that of domestic residents increased by 48.8 percent.

Integration Minister Susanne Raab (VP) said there are still great challenges in her area. In addition to the state’s offers, immigrants’ willingness to integrate is also required, Raab appealed.
