It’s the craziest story of the crazy 2020 Formula 1 season: Pierre Gasly wins the Italian Grand Prix at Monza in AlphaTauri!
The Frenchman benefits from an insane course of the race, which is completely upset by a safety car phase: leader Lewis Hamilton makes a fatal mistake in the Mercedes just like Antonio Giovinazzi (Alfa Romeo), they drive to change tires with pit lane closed, that establishes a ten-second stop-start penalty that takes Hamilton out of first place. He only gets seventh at the end.
With Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) losing many places at the start and Max Verstappen (Red Bull) not finishing, the door is open to a surprising result of the race. In the end, Gasly took the victory just under a second ahead of Carlos Sainz (McLaren) and Lance Stroll (Racing Point).
For AlphaTauri it is the second victory after Sebastian Vettel 2008 at Toro Rosso, also at Monza. For the first time since Hungary 2012, none of the “big three” Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari are on the podium.
The top ten are completed by Lando Norris (McLaren), Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes), Daniel Ricciardo (Renault), Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes), Esteban Ocon (Renault), Daniil Kvyat (AlphaTauri) and Sergio Pérez (Racing Point).
The race is temporarily interrupted after a serious accident involving Charles Leclerc (read HERE >>>).
At first everything went according to plan for Hamilton
“It’s amazing. I don’t really know what happened today. It was a crazy race,” Gasly said. The first French winner since Olivier Panis in Monaco in 1996 admitted: “Of course we benefit from the Red Flag.”
The consequences of the 21-minute break turned the rankings upside down.
Hamilton, who had started from pole position for the 94th time, pulled away as usual, in contrast to qualifying runner-up Valtteri Bottas, who was sixth on the first lap. Sainz and his teammate Lando Norris were on their way to the podium, unlike Red Bull star Max Verstappen, who didn’t move, was only eighth, and was later eliminated.
Hunters miss great World Cup opportunity
The history of this unusual race will be rewritten in the 21st of 53 laps. After a defect in Kevin Magnussen’s Haas, the safety car must be dispatched.
Hamilton, who had previously made a comfortable gap, was the only one in the top group to pit to change tires. A fatal mistake: the race direction closed the pit lane at this point.
During the break, Hamilton’s stop-start penalty (10 seconds) becomes official, so he then goes to the end of the field pushed. The sixth win of the season in race eight is out of reach, but the effects on the World Championship standings are still manageable: Bottas has replaced the Dutchman as first pursuer with Verstappen’s zero, Hamilton continues to lead comfortably with 47 points .
Spaniard Sainz is almost never second, but at first he struggles with victory: “Just one more lap. Just one more lap, then I would have caught him.”
