In the last decade, the proportion of the population with a migratory background in Austria has increased considerably. 2,070,100 people, or almost a quarter of the population, are immigrants or have immigrant parents. This is demonstrated by the first data of the integration report that will be presented on Tuesday.
This value means an increase of around 35 percent compared to 2010. As expected, this has something to do with the large movement of refugees in 2015. Since then, around 118,000 people have received protection, that is, more than the number of residents of the city of Klagenfurt, as emphasized by the Ministry of Integration.
About a quarter of students with a non-German colloquial language
This development is also reflected in schools. The proportion of students with non-German colloquial language has increased from 17.6 percent in 2010 to 26.4 percent in 2019. The situation in the labor market is unfavorable, which is closely related to the crisis in the crown. The unemployment rate for foreigners was 74.2 percent higher in June 2020 than in June 2019, while that of residents increased only 48.8 percent compared to the same month the previous year.
Integration Minister Susanne Raab (ÖVP) believes that there are still big challenges in integration and that Austria is “a rocky road”. In addition to the extensive offers of the state, the willingness of immigrants to integrate is also required.
