Organic share in Austrian retail will hit a new record this year.
Agriculture Minister Elisabeth Köstinger (ÖVP) announced on Saturday that the value would be in double digits for the first time and would amount to 10 percent. This was the result of the latest AMA roll analysis, which will be presented next Monday. Milk and eggs are especially popular, but so are potatoes, vegetables, and fruit yogurt.
An average household in Austria bought organic fresh produce worth 97 euros in the first half of 2020, which corresponds to an increase of 17 percent. In the last six months, all Austrians have used an organic product at least once.
Köstinger welcomes the postponement of the EU regulation
The previous year, organic products were sold worth around two billion euros. That corresponded to an increase of 6.7 percent.
Köstinger also welcomed the postponement of EU organic regulation for one year until January 1, 2022. Austria, like 24 other member states, was in favor of the postponement. “This leaves more time to complete the necessary implementing and delegated acts,” said Köstinger. She also spoke out against changes in the basic regulations.
More time for farmers
“Many of the far-reaching changes are difficult to implement in times of the Covid 19 pandemic,” explained Köstinger. “The additional year of transition gives our farmers more time to prepare for the upcoming changes.”
According to Köstinger, another year of transition is in the offing for the EU’s common agricultural policy. She hopes that the new common agricultural policy will not be implemented until January 2023.
