The Monza stewards had more work to do on Saturday afternoon. Only in Q1 they had to cancel the fastest lap for 7 drivers because the race cars on the Parabolica exceeded the track limit with all 4 wheels.

For their part, the drivers were busy trying to get into the top position in slipstream poker on the high-speed track near Milan. Sebastian Vettel at Ferrari could not do that and missed Q2 of the top 15 by 0.047 seconds in 17th place, while his teammate Charles Leclerc was saved in 11th place in the second qualifying segment. But that was also the end of the line for the Monegasque, the previous year’s winner will start in 13th place at the Italian Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton smashed Kimi Räikkönnen’s old lap record in Q2 with 1.19.092 minutes (1.19.119 minutes). At the end of Q2, Valtteri Bottas improved the lap record to 1,18,952 minutes.
In the battle for pole in Q3, Hamilton achieved a new course record in 1.18.887 minutes on the asphalt of Monza, for the world champion it is the 94th pole position of his career.
