“The children were lying dead in their beds, the breakfast bowls were still on the kitchen table,” said Marcel Maierhofer, head of the homicide squad in Wuppertal, describing the oppressive impressions of the police officers. They discovered the family tragedy in the city of Solingen (North Rhine-Westphalia) on Thursday around 2 pm Christiane K. (27) had previously drugged and suffocated her children, Melina (1), Leonie (2), Sophie ( 3), Timo (6) and Luca (8).
“The woman probably committed the act in a state of emotional overload,” says Maierhofer. The 27-year-old had her eldest son, Marcel (11), removed from school early, claiming that there had been a death in the family. With the eleven-year-old girl she got on the train to Mönchengladbach, where her mother lives. In Düsseldorf, however, she went out and let the boy drive alone to her grandmother’s house.
Thrown in front of an incoming train
The 27-year-old started a WhatsApp chat with her mother on the platform. She is doing very badly, she simply cannot cope with her husband’s separation anymore, she wrote according to Maierhofer. “When the grandmother wrote: I will call the police now, the answer was: ‘Send the police to the apartment, the five children are dead.’ Her son was still on the train to his grandmother’s house in Mönchengladbach. After the talk, Christiane K. stood on the platform for 20 minutes and then threw herself in front of an oncoming train. According to the police, she suffered “internal but not fatal injuries. She is currently unresponsive.” The 27-year-old received an arrest warrant for murder in five cases.
Children of three relationships
Investigators have not yet been able to question the only surviving child, Marcel. The eleven-year-old boy is currently with his grandmother in Mönchengladbach, who also alerted the police. The six children of the woman come from three relationships. Consequently, Timo, Sophie, Leonie and Melina had the same father, the husband of 28 years. She has been separated from him for a year. Luca, whom Christiane K. also killed, came from a previous relationship.
And Marcel, whom Christiane K. gave birth to shortly after her 16th birthday, is from an even earlier relationship. The family was known for the city’s youth welfare office. “The city of Solingen gave him the necessary support. The youth welfare office has also made possible offers of help,” the city said on Friday, without giving details. “At no time were there any findings of abnormalities or a potential risk to the children.” Regarding the personal rights of the affected family members, no further information could be provided.
