Around 19 million euros will be used to purchase a new system and two million euros to adapt the infrastructure. “The Goldhaube system and its stations are the eyes of the republic,” Tanner said during a visit to the radar station on Thursday. The modernization ensures “that we can react to threats from the air in a timely manner,” said the defense minister.

The radar station, in operation since 1968, plays a key role in passive aerial surveillance. According to the army, its main task is to generate data on flight movements. It is the so-called primary radar system and is therefore based on the reflection location principle (echo principle). The three-dimensional detection means that non-cooperative flying objects can also be recognized, he said.

Heer has three radar stations

Once a week, according to the armed forces, foreign planes that want to fly over Austrian airspace are rejected on average. Mainly due to the lack of overflight permits.

The army has a total of three fixed radar stations. Besides Kolomansberg, there is one in Steinmandl (Lower Austria) and one in Koralpe (Carinthia), as well as other mobile radar devices.
