The refugee situation in Lampedusa has reached a critical point for two months, and most recently the mayor threatened a general strike. The government has now announced that it will vacate the crowded initial reception center. A local inspection.
Lampedusa. A bare-chested man slinks hunched through the parched bushes by the road. A little further on, another disappears behind cacti that reach head level. They both move quickly and safely through the undergrowth despite the plastic slippers on their feet. Over and over they stop and make sure no one follows them. But the air is clean and its escape goes unnoticed.
This scene does not come from a thriller but takes place almost every day on the Italian Mediterranean island of Lampedusa. The men are Tunisian immigrants who have just fled the initial reception center for refugees, from which they are not actually allowed to leave due to crown requirements. The “access point” is a few hundred meters further down the street behind a chain link fence and is guarded by the Italian army.
