Dominic Thiem allowed himself a few extra minutes on the tennis court on his 27th birthday, which he celebrated at the National Tennis Center in New York as in previous years: in the first set he left Sumit Nagal after a 3-0 victory. Starting again to equalize, in the second round Thiem failed to serve at the beginning with a score of 5: 2 (to later win the set with a break).
Both players suffered a loss a year ago at Arthur Ashe Stadium: Nagal against Roger Federer, Thiem was weakened by illness and inferior to Thomas Fabbiano. The Austrian, who came in second, did not take his opponent lightly, Thiem was especially warned by Nagal’s forehand. On the other hand, this hit is also perhaps the greatest strength of this year’s Australian Open finalist. Not to mention Thiem’s fitness level, who need not fear comparison on the ATP circuit.
Thiem with an impeccable record against Cilic
In his first match, Thiem only had to overcome two sets, opponent Jaume Munar gave up after losing the second round. Against Nadal he entered correctly in a third act, Thiem had break chances again, took the lead 2-0. And in the last sentence I never thought of a return. Thiem dominated with service and forehand, and when he got the chance, he connected after his hits. Nagal, who a few days ago was in the quarter-finals of the first Prague Challenger and won a set against Stan Wawrinka there, could not find a way to put the favorite in danger.
Thiem missed his first game ball after 1:56 hours with a backhand error, and in the second the forehand hit the net. But the third sat down: Nagal volleyed.
In the third round, Dominic Thiem will play Marin Cilic on Saturday. After his successful comeback against Denis Kudla, the 2014 winner also struggled against Norbert Gombos, but won in four sets. Thiem played Cilic twice and won just as often, most recently in Montreal in 2019. The first meeting took place in Brisbane in 2016. Cilic is a true champion, Thiem said after his victory, and is looking forward to the first match against the Croatian at the Grand Slam level.
