After several months, the new “Cool Encounter Zone Neubaugasse” was inaugurated with many political celebrities. Starting September 7, bus 13A will once again pass through Neubaugasse in both directions.

NEW BUILDING. “Get on everything, get on everything, the bus is leaving!” Those were the almost magical words after which the double-decker classic 13A began to move slowly. For a few hundred meters, the guests of honor passed from Burggasse to Richtergasse via the new Neubaugasse. Large contingent on a big day for the 7th district: The assembly area has officially opened as of today, September 3.

On the top floor of the two-story, District President Markus Reiter (Greens), Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ), Public Transport Councilor Ulli Sima (SPÖ) and Chamber of Commerce President Walter Ruck assured the front seats. “First stop at Schnitzelwirt,” the visibly relieved cyclist joked shortly before the Westbahnstrasse intersection, waving repeatedly from the window and initiating applause for the construction workers who were lined up at the corner of Lindengasse waiting for 13A. The following applies to the new Neubaugasse: What lasts a long time is finally good.

Barrier-free Neubaugasse

The newly designed section between Mariahilfer Strasse and Burggasse is 800 meters long, everything is paved on one level and has no barriers. The light granite of the Waldviertel reflects the sun, rainwater can seep into the ground unsealed between the paving stones.

But it’s not quite ready, also due to the crown-related four-week hiatus – 29 trees and numerous trellis climbing plants won’t be planted until late fall. Some of the green beds have already been planted with perennials. Biking is allowed in both directions and there are dozens of bike parking spaces available. There are also almost 100 seats free of consumption. Two water sources, seven fire hydrants and fog trails, which spread cool mist in hot climates, also provide cooling.

In hindsight, the Neubaugasse megaproject, which cost the city around eleven million euros, was “a tricky part”, as Ulli Sima did after laying the last two ready-to-show cobblestones, at 28 kilos per stone, for true, not an easy task for cyclists. and the boss of the commercial street Kurt Wilhelm – called. This was mainly related to the Herculean task of finding a new route for 13A. “Now I know more about all the cross streets in Neubaugasse than I really wanted to know,” Birgit Hebein said in the comment. “The ambitious program was the biggest challenge in the renovation,” says Markus Reiter. “But I have that in my head and in hindsight I wouldn’t do anything different. It just confirmed my courage.”

Second section for remodeling

The 13A, with 15 million passengers a year, Vienna’s busiest bus route, will travel in both directions from 7 September at a maximum of 20 km / h in both directions. The three new double-sided stops are located on Mariahilfer Straße with a connection to the U3 Neubaugasse, at the Theater der Jugend with the option of switching to tram line 49 and at Burggasse, where passengers can change to 48A.

But new builders will also need a lot of patience in the future when it comes to construction sites. The district is not yet finished with Neubaugasse: detailed planning for the northern part up to Lerchenfelder Straße, which will be redesigned next year, is already in full swing. This section can and should be even greener than the southern one. Due to the one-way route, the bus only needs five meters of lane width instead of six meters. Construction work should be completed when school begins in the fall of 2021; hopefully, there will be applause for the construction workers again.
