A search operation in Schwarzach (Pongau) had a happy ending on Thursday: emergency services found an 89-year-old man with dementia in the morning.
The man had been missing from a retirement home in Schwarzach since Wednesday night. The fire department, police, mountain and water rescue were on duty with 60 men and search dogs. The entire local area was recorded, as well as the Salzach and its embankments. The mission had to be unsuccessfully canceled at midnight due to darkness.
Schwarzach: 89 years discovered in the safety net
At 7 am, emergency services continued their search. Around 8 am, the fault could be discovered in a safety net over the railroad line. “He is confused and hypothermic, but otherwise in good shape,” section commander Roman Spiegel told SALZBURG24.
Rescue by rescue rope
The emergency services of the mountain rescue corps and firefighters were directed to the missing person by radio. Following first aid by emergency services, the 89-year-old man was rescued from the impassable, hypothermic but sensitive terrain with the “Martin 1” rescue helicopter and airlifted to Schwarzach hospital. The mission lasted until 9 a.m.
The B311 and the railway line were closed during the operation.
