Jochen Rindt commemorative year in Graz inaugurated with tram

With the unveiling of a tram dedicated to Formula 1 legend Jochen Rindt, the year of commemoration of the Grand Prix driver has been opened, which has been postponed due to Corona. At Wednesday’s event in Graz’s central cemetery, the half brother of the man who died 50 years ago, Uwe Eisleben, and the daughter, Natascha Rindt, were guests of honor.

At the opening of the commemorative year, the speakers left no doubt that Graz considers Rindt, who was born in Mainz but raised in the capital of Styria, as its son. Regardless of his German citizenship, he had “become Austrian, Styrian, herding,” explained Mayor Siegfried Nagl (ÖVP), who, like Governor Hermann Schützenhöfer (ÖVP), had come to honor Rindt.

Big plans for the memorial year

For the commemorative year, they had come up with some ideas, such as the tram that had a “special brand” for Jochen Rindt. The inscriptions “Pop Star”, “World Champion” and “Citizen of the World” should do justice to the many facets of Rindt, according to the mayor. Another highlight of the commemorative year will be a major exhibition by Jochen Rindt at the Graz Museum from May next year: “So that future generations know that he was a great Graz man.”

The tram also carries the words “Jochen Rindt lives”; this probably refers to the fact that F1 fans held up posters saying “Jochen lives” for a long time during the Grand Prix after Rindt was killed in an accident at Monza.
