Starting today, around € 180 million will be paid to 400,000 people who received at least 60 days of unemployment benefit or emergency assistance between May 1 and August 31, 2020.

In July, the government decided a one-time payment of 450 euros for people who received at least 60 days of unemployment benefit or emergency assistance between May 1 and August 31, 2020. Starting today, Wednesday, it will be paid the money.

The single payment for unemployment costs 180 million euros

In total, it has turned into about 180 million euros for 400,000 beneficiaries, announced the Ministry of Labor. Money is transferred automatically, no separate application is necessary.

Also eligible are people who are no longer unemployed at the time of payment. It also does not reduce unemployment benefits, unemployment assistance, or the minimum income.

Most of the beneficiaries are at home in Vienna.

About four out of ten beneficiaries (160,000) are in their homes in Vienna. It is followed by Lower Austria (60,000), Upper Austria and Styria (45,000 each), Tyrol (30,000 each), Carinthia and Salzburg (20,000 each), Vorarlberg (15,000) and Burgenland (10,000). The exact numbers must be available after the measurement has been completed.

“In particular, people who lost their jobs through no fault of their own in the course of the crisis have faced major challenges in recent months. Therefore, they are also supported with 450 euros, which is automatically transferred to the accounts, “said Labor Minister Christine Aschbacher (ÖVP) on this occasion.

SPÖ asked for an increase in unemployment benefits

When the National Council decided in July, the SPÖ criticized the fact that the one-time payment of € 450 would not prevent poverty or support purchasing power and consumption. Instead, he called for unemployment benefits to be increased from 55 percent of his last salary to 70 percent, but he agreed with the government in favor of the measure. The FPÖ and NEOS have voted against.
