Gürtelfrische West Review: The pool is bought, the project is repeated. A planning order is underway for the redesign and traffic reduction in the belt section.
RUDOLFSHEIM-FÜNFHAUS. The Gürtelfrische West has ended, the most talked about swimming pool in the city has been dismantled and also in Auer-Welsbach-Park (with short notice it was said that the swimming pool should be installed in the park in the next few weeks), everything will continue same. The review of the initiators, Gerhard Zatlokal (SPÖ, district head in Rudolfsheim), Markus Reiter (Greens, district head in the new building) and Deputy Mayor Birgit Hebein, is always positive. Now it is said that new concepts for the belt and legal options are being worked on to repeat the project.
“The Gürtelfrische West has shown that culture can be a connecting element between districts, between people,” Zatlokal said. It is important for him to mention that the project was more than a swimming pool, but an intercultural area, such as the KÖR bus (art in public space), a stage and the park area, to allow social interaction between promoting the population of both districts. And despite the doom prophecies, the traffic did not collapse. In this way, the Gürtelfrische West met all expectations, ”continues Zatlokal.
25,000 visitors to Gürtelfrische
In total, more than 25,000 visitors came to Gürtelfrische West, an average of more than 1,000 people per day. The pool was used about 15,000 times by people from near and far. Due to the great interest of the population, the opening hours were also extended until 9:00 p.m. during the project. The cost of the project for the city of Vienna would have been 160,000 euros once the opening hours had been extended.
On the wooden stage in the Gürtelfrische West area, 30 cultural events and 15 sports and leisure events were held. These were carried out in cooperation with a large number of initiatives and associations in the local area. Around 100 artists performed and around 50 supervisors attended sports and entertainment events. The free on-site bike control was used more than 400 times.
The bus laboratory “I need space” in cooperation with KÖR – Art in Public Space Vienna was full every day. The hotel bus was busy every night, so requests for overnight stays were booked shortly after opening. In addition to the numerous face-to-face workshops, there were 15 other events.
Pool and Belt: Plans for the Future
Going forward, legal options to buy the pool and associated technology will be examined to similarly allow and expand the replication of the project, according to Deputy Mayor Birgit Hebein. More lessons can be learned from the project: “We saw that the dreaded traffic chaos did not materialize. Gürtel residents were often given the feeling that nothing could be done about the noise of traffic and pollution from exhaust gases; now we know: the belt can also do more, ”says Hebein.
Therefore, a planning order will be given to ensure redesign and traffic calming. And also: “Our mission is to prevent the imminent climate crisis. That is the task of our generation for the next generations. Traffic is a decisive lever: the more pedestrians, cyclists and public transport drivers we have in Vienna, the better it will be for everyone. “
To business:
A pool is being created in the middle of the belt
Gerhard Zatlokal: “The central zone of the belt can do more”
But there is no pool for the Auer-Welsbach-Park
