The Hungarian border has been under tight controls again since midnight. The country measures fever in people who enter the country.
“Just a few minutes ago, you could easily cross the border at the Hegyeshalom / Nickelsdorf crossing. Since midnight, everyone has had to identify themselves and their fever is measured,” said a Euronews reporter at the scene. Suddenly there were long waiting times and traffic jams, causing disgust among travelers. A Romanian working in Germany is desperate: “I am passing through and I have to wait two or three hours,” the man told Euronews.
“Absolutely good result”
The Puls24 transmitter also dared to take a look at the Nickelsdorf border crossing that morning. When Hungary introduced border controls in March, sheet metal avalanches had occurred here that lasted for kilometers. The traffic jam reached Schwechat (Lower Austria) on the Austrian side.
The consequences of that time have not materialized today, as Hemut Marban, spokesman for the Burgenland Police Department explains in an interview: “We currently have a waiting time of about 20 minutes in both directions. That is an absolutely good result.”
Rules and exceptions
Marban speaks of smooth handling, thanks to the commitment of border guards on both sides. When asked, the official had to admit: “There is a long delay in the truck area,” but this is also due to the time of day.
In principle, only Hungarian citizens can cross the border, explains Marban. But there are also “exceptions that life writes.” Travelers are one of these exceptions. Any person who lives a maximum of 30 kilometers from the border and works within a maximum of 30 kilometers from the border may enter the country for a maximum of 24 hours.
International transit traffic, as well as international passenger and freight traffic, can only enter the country via the A4 motorway in Nickelsdorf, and must leave it again in one day. A total of ten border crossings in Burgenland with Hungary are open.
