In the middle of the first set of the match between Dominic Thiem and Jaume Munar, you could admire a statistic that summed up well the course of the match at the Louis Armstrong Stadium: ten winning shots stood out for Thiem, only two for his opponent. The Austrian number one was the most aggressive player and also led 3-2 on the first break. However, when it was time to put the phrase aside, the favorite staggered again. With his third chance Munar, who trains at Rafael Nadal’s academy, tied at 5: 5.
So tiebreaker. On the short decision, Thiem initially let a 5: 1 lead almost completely fade, and after the 6: 4 he missed two set balls. The fact that Thiem could still win the first act was thanks to a brave smash from the baseline and an ace that sealed the 8: 6 in the tie-break.
Munar has to give up after the second set
The start of the second set went well for Thiem, after several unsuccessful chances he put Munar’s serve to 2-0. And immediately charged the rebreak. Thiem coped well with the backhand and in the meantime had played his opponent quite tired: the new break to 5: 3 was very easy for the number two of the tournament. A few moments later, Thiem made the second move, and Jaume Munar had to give up.
Thiem was quite satisfied with his performance in the interview on the court: he had been on the court for almost two hours, Munar and had had strong rallies. Thiem only wished his inferior opponent the best.
In the second round, Dominic Thiem will face Indian Sumit Nagal on Thursday, who was able to beat Bradley Klahn in four sets.
