In Wald im Pinzgau, a hiker discovered a motionless ball python on a hiking trail last Friday. Soon after, he told a local about the seemingly lifeless snake. The latter then mounted the animal and brought it home. He also assumed that the python was no longer alive.
However, before long, the strangling snake should have awakened from its stiffness and be showing signs of life. So the man first tried to warm them up. He then called the police because he did not know what to do with the animal. The officers first made contact with a veterinarian and then with specialists from the reptile department at the Haus der Natur in Salzburg. They clearly identified the animal as a non-native Austrian ball python and took it away.
As police spokeswoman Irene Stauffer told the APA, the snake, which is about 1.20 meters long and weighs 1,500 grams, should be in good condition. The animal is likely not fully developed yet. The head of the reptile department of the House of Nature was not available on Monday. “It is not yet clear whether the snake was abandoned or escaped from a terrarium,” Stauffer said. So far no owner has reported.
Location: Wald im Pinzgau is a municipality in the district of Zell am See in Salzburg.
