Burgenland’s head of state Hans Peter Doskozil (SPÖ) was a guest on “ZiB 2” on Sunday and spoke about the wave of refugees in 2015.
The wave of refugees in 2015 was a turning point for Austria and Europe. The current head of the Burgenland region, Hans Peter Doskozil, remained the Burgenland Police Director, regulating the situation at the Nickelsdorf border crossing.
On Sunday evening, Doskozil moderator Martin Thür answered questions on “ZiB 2” and commented on the wave of refugees five years ago. “What was done in Nickelsdorf back then had to be done,” the governor clarified at the beginning of the program.
“Back then we were dealing with 10,000 to 20,000 people a day at a single point that was controlled. It was crazy migratory pressure that could only be handled by saying, ‘Okay, refugees will be taken to where they are.’ I want to go, “says Doskozil. At that time, many of the refugees did not want to go to Austria at all, but to Germany.
“History repeats itself”
In an interview with Martin Thür, the Burgenland Police Director at the time also stated that nothing had been learned from the events of five years ago. “History repeats itself. The question of distribution, repatriation or even the question of border security is open. These questions have not been answered for five years.”
Of course, humanity is important on the refugee issue, “but the rule of law factor is just as important,” Doskozil continued. This is also the reason why, for example, children in refugee homes in Greece cannot simply come to Austria. The 50-year-old also stated in “ZiB 2” that he had absolutely nothing against dividing up refugees in basic care in Austria.
When asked if an organized maritime rescue in Europe will be needed again soon, Doskozil said: “We need a European asylum system. You need the answers about what happens to these people who arrive in Italy or who arrive in Greece. Currently We can provide these answers as part of Europe but they don’t exist. “
“It can’t be that you let people drown”
The refugees now in the Mediterranean “have to be tried in Italy. And, of course, these people must be saved,” Doskozil said. It probably won’t go so far that “people drown in a suspected illegal border crossing.” All EU countries must also be able to ensure and guarantee that refugees receive due care.
Doskozil then also explained in the interview on which questions he agrees with the ÖVP. “I think that when it comes to the issue of procedural centers, we agree with the ÖVP.” He also agreed with the Popular Party on the issue of distribution. “There are quite a few overlaps.”
“But we certainly do not agree when Sebastian Kurz, as foreign minister, suggested implementing an Australian model in Europe. That is not justifiable under the rule of law.”
