The people of Liechtenstein voted against a railway project that would also have benefited 8,500 Austrian travelers.
The “no” of the Liechtenstein population means the end of a cross-border railway project between Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. A two-way expansion was planned between Tisis (a district in Feldkirch, V.) and Nendeln (Liechtenstein). The project could have created an S-Bahn connection between Feldkirch and Buchs (Switzerland).
With 62.3 percent of the vote, a total of 10,382 Liechtenstein residents voted against the project. Only 37.7 percent (6,274) voted in favor. The turnout was just over 83 percent. A total of 20,366 citizens of the principality had the right to vote.
Dispute over cost
Tough financing negotiations had previously taken place. Although Austria, with 66.25 per cent (around 115.6 million euros), would have assumed the majority, at least almost two thirds, of the costs and Liechtenstein would “only” have to pay 33.75 per cent, the project did not find a majority. How it goes now is fully open.
Green Provincial Councilor Johannes Rauch called the result of the vote “not good news.” The project would have been of great importance to the approximately 8,500 travelers from Vorarlberg. Rauch says the Liechtenstei road network is “overloaded in many places at peak times”. Rauch doesn’t want to give up just yet. Now he promises to discuss with partners in neighboring regions and in the federal government how the next steps might look.
