Even more dangerous than the virus

You can speak out against the crown measures. But anyone who, after the riots in the Reichstag, still believes that it is mainly concerned citizens who take to the streets of Berlin, is making a serious mistake.

A democracy has to be able to endure a lot, but at some point it will also be too much for the last democrat: this is exactly what happened on Saturday night in Berlin. when a group of protesters swept through the cordoned off areas in front of the Reichstag and plunged the steps in front of the parliament building in a sea of red and white imperial flags.

You can make protests against the measures of the crown, but you should also have arguments. With many of the protesters in Berlin, this was not a fact. Or why was a despot like Putin suddenly revered as a freedom fighter? Why was the German colonial era praised as a gift to humanity and especially to the people of Africa at a rally?

And why was the crowd cheering both enthusiastically, the crowd who in the run-up to the rally always only identified as concerned citizens? The imperial war flags in every nook and cranny couldn’t be overlooked?

Those who despise democracy believe they have a place in society

Anyone seriously wanting to speak out against Corona’s measures on Saturday did not just do so with sincere skeptics or people who have lost everything because of the Corona crisis. He also did the same with right-wing extremists and Reich citizens who want to overthrow our democracy and end our way of life. And with that we now have a problem: those who despise democracy believe that their worldview now has a place in our society, that their thoughts are becoming socially acceptable.

Unfortunately, there will never be a vaccine against hatred, we can only hope that something that is even more dangerous than the coronavirus itself will not ferment. This attack on democracy will pose problems for Germany for a long time.
