meRiots broke out in the Swedish city of Malmö after reports circulated that an edition of the Koran had been violated in an illegal demonstration. Some 15 people were temporarily detained during the protests on Friday night, police said Saturday. Order was restored in the early hours of the morning.
Some 300 people set cars and tires on fire in the Rosengard immigrant district and stoned police and rescue personnel. The reason for this was the images that circulated on the Internet showing a trampled volume of the Quran. The excitement of the crowd increased when a Quran was said to have been burned.
Before the images of the desecration of the Koran circulated, some supporters of the leader of the Danish Islamophobic party Strammer Kurs, Rasmus Paludan, had gathered in Malmö for an action against the Koran. Their demonstration had previously been banned by the police and the ban was upheld by a court. Paludan himself had been prevented from entering Sweden and banned from entering Sweden for two years. Police broke up the demonstration and arrested six people on suspicion of causing riots against an ethnic group.
Malmö Police Chief Stefan Sinteus said police are investigating the incidents. He works with religious communities and other groups to make sure everyone feels safe.
