Coronavirus: Hungary closes its borders as of September 1

Also in Hungary, the number of corona infections has increased in recent days. More recently it was 132 people per day. A total of 5,511 corona infections were detected in the country. 614 people have died of Covid-19 in Hungary to date. Currently, masks are required in closed public spaces with the exception of restaurants, and free spaces must also be respected.

Furthermore, the virus is circulating in the highest government circles. The right-wing conservative government around Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has therefore announced a drastic step: the crown’s regulations will be tightened, as of September 1 all the country’s borders will be closed.

This was announced by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gergely Gulyás, on Friday in Budapest. Foreign citizens can only enter Hungarian territory with a justified exception.

14 day quarantine

The closure is aimed at minimizing the risk of the virus being introduced, as most infections can be traced back to residence abroad, Gulyás said. Hungarian citizens returning to Hungary, on the other hand, must remain in quarantine for 14 days, unless they have two negative corona tests that were performed two days apart. The costs of the tests are borne by those affected, since “even the much richer Germany has also switched to this scheme,” said the minister. The Foreign Ministry in Vienna declined to comment on the Hungarian border closures for the time being.

Transit corridors will be secured, emphasized Gulyás. What the new scenario really means for travelers has not been communicated at the moment. According to the government, more details will be released this Saturday.

The strictest measures are aimed at ensuring the safety of particularly vulnerable older people, children preparing for the start of school and the smooth running of the economy, Gulyas explained. School classes in Hungary will resume from September 1, so the situation in schools and possible renewed closures will be assessed separately. In any case, it is advisable to refrain from celebrations at the beginning of school, said the minister. The new ordinances will be valid for one month and will be discussed again in October.

Holidays in Orbans Croatia

To avoid a scenario like the current one, Orbán had asked the Hungarian population to go home on vacation. For the prime minister himself, however, a holiday in Hungary would have been too boring. He preferred to get comfortable in the Croatian Adriatic on a sailboat. “The Hungarian prime minister was caught not living what he preached,” wrote the Croatian daily. Jutarnji’s List. Orbán was seen sailing in Dalmatia.
