In schools, principals are making final preparations for the return of students to compulsory schools starting next Monday. At the Ministry of Education, the head of the department, Heinz Faßmann (ÖVP) also has another innovation developed after weeks of home schooling. Students who are weak or unavailable to teachers in home classes must make up for the summer break lessons from mid-August to the start of the new school year. “Exactly which students are concerned about this has not yet been clarified,” he told the “Wiener Zeitung.”
It is clear to Faßmann that this summer school will take place in the last weeks of the holidays. This could apply to students attending support classes in German due to language deficits. However, it is anticipated that primarily teachers will not be deployed during this time. It is planned to use the teaching of the students for this from mid-August. There will be clarity later in May, when regular classes in lower level classes at Volks, Mittel and AHS have started again.
90 percent teach “voluntarily” on window days
The Minister of Education announced in late April that the two business days after Ascension Day and Corpus Christi would also be taught on May 22 and June 12. After a compromise with the teachers union and to avoid having to change the law, ministers and teacher unions have jointly asked teachers to teach “voluntarily” on both Fridays. After the Ministerial Council on Wednesday, Fassmann reported that more than 90 percent of school locations will teach “voluntarily” after the call.

Lower Austria, Salzburg: teachers over 60 out of service
Another recommendation of the Ministry of Education for teaching, on the other hand, apparently is not followed in the federal states. The department has announced to federal schools that not only teachers who are generally classified as at-risk patients may be exempt from service, but also teachers over the age of 60 because of their own age. The countries and the educational departments responsible for compulsory school teachers were recommended to apply this regulation. This immediately sparked protests over the preference given to teachers over other older workers over the age of 60. Now after Carinthia, where Governor Peter Kaiser (SPÖ) quickly refused, Vorarlberg will not use it either. Also in Vienna, Upper Austria, Tyrol and Styria, compulsory school teachers over 60 should not be automatically exempted. Lower Austria and Salzburg, on the other hand, will take advantage of this opportunity. AHS principals spokeswoman Lower Austria Isabella Zins, however, noted that teachers who were released from the class could be used for other activities.
School development program presented to the Council of Ministers
Faßmann presented a program for school development from 2020 to 2030 to the Council of Ministers. With an investment volume of 2.42 trillion euros, 270 construction projects will be implemented within ten years. The focus is on renovating school buildings. However, new school buildings are also being built, especially in conurbations such as Vienna, north of the Danube. The reason for this is the large number of students with a migration background.
