Next step in the curious Michael Flynn lawsuit: the Justice Department called for an end to criminal proceedings against the former national security adviser to the President of the United States, Donald Trump, after the former general reversed his confession in the Russian matter . But responsible federal judge Emmet Sullivan does not seem to want to stop the process without further delay. On Wednesday night, he ordered a retired judge now, among other things, to examine the legal situation regarding possible recruitment as an adviser.
The decree was a very unusual process, according to the US media. However, this also applied to last week’s request from the Justice Ministry to stop the process despite at least unclear evidence. Democrats accused the government of undue political interference in the judiciary.
Flynn initially admitted in the course of the investigation into possible Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election that he had lied to the federal FBI. In December 2017, he pleaded guilty to telling the truth about his contacts with the Russian ambassador when he testified before the FBI in January of the same year. Flynn was forced to resign as Trump’s Republican security adviser after just 23 days in office in February 2017. Trump himself tweeted in late 2017 that he had to fire Flynn because he lied to the police FBI federal and vice president Mike Pence. In January, Flynn asked to withdraw her confession.
Meanwhile, Flynn’s trial has become a campaign issue, with which Republicans in particular are inciting his base against an alleged establishment conspiracy. Trump now calls Flynn “heroes.” Last week he added: “He was an innocent man.” Flynn was the victim of the FBI’s crooked machinations, Trump said.
Previously, documents emerged that Trump and his conservative allies believed that Flynn had been duped by the FBI. The handwritten note from an FBI investigator said Flynn had to be told to lie in order to be prosecuted or fired. Trump later said that Flynn was now “completely relieved.”
