In three days there will only be random checks at the border. All border controls will be abolished on June 15.
Controls at the German border will be carefully relaxed next Friday. The German Interior Ministry is aiming for a complete end to the controls introduced on all border sections due to the crown pandemic on June 15, it said Wednesday after the cabinet meeting in Berlin.
Controls at the German borders will be relaxed starting Friday. Interior Minister Horst Seehofer said in Berlin on Wednesday that France, Austria and Switzerland agreed to loosen the control measures as a first step and to end them entirely on June 15 if the infection situation allowed it.
If possible, all border crossings with Austria, France and Switzerland should be opened as early as Saturday, Seehofer said. Until now, crossing the border was only possible at selected crossings. Also, only random checks will be carried out at all German borders starting Saturday. For this there should be no entries from Spain and Italy beyond May 15, so there is an agreement with Austria, France and Switzerland, Seehofer said. Controls with Luxembourg should completely cease from Saturday, a similar solution is being discussed with Denmark.

Controls were introduced on March 16.
On March 16 controls were introduced at the German borders with Denmark, Luxembourg, France, Austria and Switzerland to curb the infection in Germany. Since then, only those who can give a “valid reason” for it, such as travelers, members of the medical profession, or EU citizens heading to their home country, can enter the country. Caring for family members and other family reasons could also be partially affirmed. More facilities are now provided here. Also, based on dpa information, all border crossings must be allowed to be reused. In the past few weeks, only a few major traffic routes have been opened to cross the border.
Today, the European Commission also wanted to present a plan for the cautious opening of internal borders in Europe. According to a draft dpa, controls will be phased out across Europe.
