METERAt least five people died on the Dutch coast while surfing. Three surfers were recovered dead from the North Sea on Tuesday, police in The Hague said. Two bodies had already been recovered on Monday night.

A group of surfers got into trouble on Monday night off the Scheveningen coast, near The Hague, with strong winds and strong currents. According to the coast guard, at least seven were unable to reach the beach on their own and were rescued from the North Sea by rescue workers. Aid came too late for two of them. A third person had been hospitalized.

The search for the disappeared stopped at around 11 p.m. Rescuers resumed the search at 6 a.m. on Tuesday morning.

Den said two of the crashed surfers were trained first responders
Haag’s “night mayor” Pat Smith on the Den Haag FM radio station. They had disappeared in the spray during exercise, which “had hit them like an avalanche.”

More recently, a deadly shark attack on a surfer off the California coast had made headlines. Shark attacks in which the animal was not previously caused by humans are rare. Last year, the University of Florida had 64 such incidents, two people died. Between 2014 and 2018, there was an average of 82 attacks and four deaths a year.
