According to Maltese media, Michael Zammit Tabona had written in a Facebook post that had since been removed: “We detained Hitler 75 years ago. Who will detain Angela Merkel? She has fulfilled Hitler’s dream! Control Europe.”
Maltese Foreign Minister Evarist Bartolo confirmed to the Times of Malta newspaper on Sunday that the ambassador had resigned and that an apology would be sent to Germany for the “callous” comment. The end of World War II was celebrated 75 years ago in Europe on Friday.
