The doctor simply disappears during surgery: the patient dies – Upper Austria

Investigations are ongoing at the Kepler Clinic in Linz after a doctor is said to have simply left an operation. The 77-year-old patient died soon after.

The incident already happened on Tuesday. A rescue helicopter transported a 77-year-old doctor to the Kepler Clinic as an emergency with an aortic rupture, reports the “Oberösterreichische Nachrichten”. Since it was a very serious injury, the man should be operated on by a senior doctor in the cardiac, vascular and thoracic surgery department.

However, during the operation, the main doctor turned the operation over to an assistant doctor and left the operating room, according to the report. At the request of the ORF, this is confirmed in the clinic, but he relativized that the doctor in question later returned to the operation. Meanwhile, he was in his private practice.

Family was informed of death

The operation was completed, but the patient died later. It is now being investigated whether the death could be related to leaving the operating room. There is no “medical-technical” misconduct on the part of the doctor in the hospital. However, it is correct that the operating room can be briefly left for coffee or a visit to the bathroom, but that a sufficiently trained physician should always be present.

The hospital also informed the patient’s relatives about the incident and the investigation. The physician in question is temporarily suspended from work until the test results are available. If the suspicion against the doctor hardens, there is a risk of dismissal and a criminal consequence.
