According to analysis of data from Scottish universities and the Scottish Public Health health authority, one dose of vaccine is already showing effect.
According to a preliminary data analysis, even the first of two vaccines with the Astrazeneca preparation can reduce the risk of hospitalization from Covid-19 by up to 94 percent. That comes from an analysis published Monday by several Scottish universities and the public health authority Public Health Scotland. The Biontech and Pfizer vaccine reduces the risk of hospitalization with the first dose by approximately 85 percent.
Values correspond to the fourth week after receiving the first dose. It compared how many percent fewer hospital admissions there were for people who were vaccinated for the first time than for people who had not yet been vaccinated. For the study, which has not yet been published in a specialized journal, the scientists used data from 5.4 million people, almost the entire Scottish population. The period between December 8 and February 15 was taken into account. During that time, 1.14 million doses of vaccine have been administered in Scotland. More than one in five people in the UK have been vaccinated.
One dose of vaccine takes effect
“These results have shown a substantial effect in reducing the risk of hospitalization from a single dose of vaccine in the Scottish population,” said Jim McMenamin, director of coronavirus at Public Health Scotland, according to the statement.
The UK has a vaccination strategy of giving as many people a first vaccine as possible. The second dose will only be given after twelve weeks. In total, around 17.5 million people in the UK have already been vaccinated with a first dose.
