On Saturday there will be a “siren rehearsal” throughout Austria. The three civil defense signals will be heard between 12 noon and 12:45.

On Saturday, a national civil defense alarm test will be held again. After the “Siren Test” signal, the three civil protection signals “Warning”, “Alarm” and “All clear” are transmitted via 8,200 fire service sirens throughout Austria between 12 noon and 12 noon: 45 pm. The test alarm is used to verify the technical equipment of the warning and alarm system, and the population should also become familiar with the signals, according to the Interior Ministry.

Austria has a well-developed alert and alarm system, which is operated by the Ministry of the Interior together with the offices of the state governments. “This means that Austria is one of the few countries that has a full siren alert,” the Interior Ministry said in a broadcast on Tuesday. In the previous year, 99.71 percent of the sirens worked perfectly.

KATWARN App Launch Test

In addition to the activation of these sirens, an activation test of the population alert system based on the KATWARN Österreich / Austria application will be carried out in parallel, as in the previous year. It is available free of charge for smartphones and as an SMS and email service and is used in conjunction with siren signals to warn the public if necessary.

The meaning of the signals is as follows:

  • Siren test: 15 seconds. Warning: three minutes of constant tone. Danger is coming! Turn on the radio or television (ORF) or the Internet, observe the rules of conduct.
  • Alarm: howling sound that rises and falls for one minute. Danger! Go to protective areas or rooms, follow the behavioral measures given on the radio or television (ORF) or on the Internet.
  • All clear: one minute constant tone. End of danger! See more information about the radio and television set (ORF) or the Internet.
