For the third day in a row, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) posted a new all-time high for the number of daily infections. On Saturday, the RKI reported 7,830 new cases. Friday was 7334, Thursday 6638.
According to the institute, another 33 people died from or with the virus. Germany recorded a total of 9,767 deaths in connection with the pandemic. According to the RKI, at least 356,387 people in Germany have been shown to have been infected with the Sars-CoV-2 virus since the beginning of the Corona crisis (until October 17 at 12:00 am).
The numbers are not directly comparable
The number of new infections reported in one day is greater than ever. However, it is not directly comparable to the spring record value of 6294 on March 28. Meanwhile, many more tests are done every day, so more infections are found.
According to experts, recently reported infections are an indication of how much the virus spread in society about a week ago due to the time between infection, test, result, and report. That is why it takes some time before political measures are reflected in the reporting figures.
The leader of the union parliamentary group Ralph Brinkhaus demanded a line at the national level in the fight against the high number of infections. “Everything else is not only causing great irritation in the population at this time, but is hindering consistent and grouped action against Corona,” the CDU politician wrote in a letter to the CDU and CSU members.
