More corona patients in hospitals again
Half a year after the lockdown came into effect on March 16, the number of coronavirus cases in Austria is again at a higher level. While the number of new infections declined rapidly since late March, the same development was evident in hospital patients about a month later. Now, the number of Covid-19 patients in hospitals has increased again and the increase in deaths is stable for the moment.
After the number of new infections per day had exponentially increased to more than 1,000 by March 27, exit restrictions resulted in a rapid decline in positive test results. On March 28, 920 new cases were reported, 744 infected people were in the hospital, 135 of them in intensive care. On that day, the death toll from Covid 19 rose to 105 for the first time since the start of the pandemic in Austria.
Peak on March 31
From this point on, the number of new daily infections decreased significantly. However, occupancy in hospitals with infected people still reached its highest level on March 31, with 1,110 people affected, 198 of them in intensive care units. The number of hospital patients was stable at just over 1,000 for about two weeks. The previous high among intensive care patients was reached on April 8 with 267 people.
While the number of people hospitalized steadily declined, the number of deaths rose dramatically from 105 on March 28 to just under 600 in early May, then this curve flattened. In early June, daily new infections fell into the low double-digit range, the number of hospitalized patients was below 100 for the entire month, the occupancy of Covid-19 patients in intensive care units dropped to six on June 30.
So far 758 infected people have died
At the beginning of July, values of more than 100 new positive tests were produced again per day and the number of hospital patients regularly rose to the triple-digit range at the end of the month or beginning of August. In mid-August, confirmed cases jumped multiple times in a 24-hour comparison to more than 200, to Sept. 12 with 869 new infections, the highest value since March 28.
The number of hospitalizations also rose again in recent weeks with a small delay in new infections. On Wednesday 321 patients were in hospitals, 54 of them in intensive care units. The death toll has not increased at the same rate so far, a total of 758 since the coronavirus began to spread. This added 90 victims from late May through Wednesday, by then 668 people infected with SARS-CoV-2 had died.
