After an increase in the number of cases of infection by the new corona virus, Iceland has adopted strict conditions. Most sports venues, bars and restaurants will be closed from Monday, according to the Reykjavik Health Ministry. The Nordic island state has weathered the pandemic relatively well so far.
No more than 100 customers are allowed to be in supermarkets at the same time, and pools can only receive half as many visitors as usual. Now only groups of a maximum of 20 people can meet. According to the ministry, the restrictions should apply for two to three weeks.
“In recent days, the number of new cases occurring every day has been relatively constant from 30 to 40, so it is clear that current measures are not enough to adequately control the epidemic,” said a statement from the chief. Epidemiologist Thorolfur Gudnason. The most recent steps to toughen regulations came after outbreaks in two Reykjavik nursing homes and a sharp increase in hospital admissions.
In the past 19 days, Iceland has reported 663 new cases, mainly in and around the capital Reykjavik. Since the pandemic began earlier this year, Iceland has recorded 2,872 cases and 10 deaths. The country has 365,000 inhabitants.
