6 pm curfew: Protests throughout Italy

Thousands of people demonstrated for the second time in a few days in Naples against the night curfew in the region from 11 pm to 5 am and the early closure of restaurants, cafes and bars. The protesters gathered in the main square, Piazza del Plebiscito, and chanted anti-government slogans. The strictest security precautions were taken to avoid riots like the one on Friday night when a group of right-wing extremists attacked the police. Some policemen were injured and seven people were arrested.

In Milan, angry restaurant owners gathered in front of the Lombardy region headquarters. “The closure at 6pm is worse for us than a total closure,” said a spokesman for the protesters. Taxi drivers protested in Turin. In Palermo, merchants and bar owners took to the streets.

The Interior Ministry in Rome warned against violent protests. Citizen demonstrations against the restrictive measures could be infiltrated by anarchist or right-wing extremist groups. The government will not tolerate violence, he said.

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte presented new restrictive measures at a press conference on Sunday, which took effect on Monday. As of Monday, bars and restaurants close at 6:00 p.m. A maximum of four people can sit at a table in restaurants. Takeaway services are still planned. Cinemas, theaters, game rooms, clubs, public sports facilities and swimming pools will be completely closed.

In view of the increasing number of infections, measures are necessary to control the epidemic curve and not to overburden the health system. “The country cannot afford another blockade. We have to take into account the needs of public health as well as those of the economy,” said the independent head of government.

The prime minister announced measures to support the professions most affected by the new safeguards. Compensation is foreseen for culture, gastronomy and the entertainment industry. These measures will be decided at a meeting of the Council of Ministers on Tuesday.
