Security experts warn of a vulnerability in iPhones and iPads: Criminals may have been exploiting this for years.
The security vulnerability is hidden in the pre-installed email application. Attackers would have to send an email to their victims to exploit this vulnerability. The big danger is that users don’t absolutely need to open dangerous emails. Malicious software can also be loaded onto devices without owner interaction. Even more disgusting: hackers can apparently delete malicious emails remotely. Users may not even know that their device contains malware.
The vulnerability has existed since 2012
Zecops noticed the gap after strange devices crashed from customers. Weaknesses are already being exploited, the company wrote in a statement. The vulnerability has been included since the iOS 6 operating system. This system was introduced in 2012 with the iPhone 5. According to the company, however, the problem no longer exists in the current beta version of iOS 13.4.5. When this will be available to users is unclear.
Zecops reported the problem to Apple. The company still wanted to make the vulnerability public. Because: Criminals are supposed to have learned about vulnerability discovery and now want to attack as many targets as possible before the problem is solved.
Apple has not yet commented on the problem. If you want to protect yourself from the vulnerability, you currently have two options: you no longer use the pre-installed email app, or you install the public beta version of iOS or iPad OS 13.4.5. However, since beta versions may still contain bugs, you do so at your own risk.
