One person who witnessed the accident up close was Alan van der Merwe, the driver of the medical car. Together with Formula 1 doctor Ian Roberts, he was one of the first to arrive at the crash site.
“I hadn’t seen anything like it in twelve years. I’ve never seen so much fire with such impact,” says van der Merwe. “It took us a moment to understand what happened. I can’t tell if it was just a second, but it felt like an eternity.”
Van der Merwe and Roberts couldn’t do anything at first, they had to watch Grosjean break free from the burning car. “It was a relief when he came out and he was fine,” says van der Merwe.

Hamilton: “Thankful that the railing didn’t behead Grosjean”
