Chancellor Angela Merkel announced this on Sunday after consultations with the prime minister. The partial blockade that has been in force since the beginning of November “was not enough,” said the head of government in Berlin. The tightening of the measures affects the holidays. But: “We are obliged to act and we are acting now.”
The exponential growth of new corona infections could stall for a while, Merkel said. But then there was a “lateral movement”, and for a few days there has been exponential growth again.
“Corona has gotten out of control,” warned Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder. “The location is actually five to twelve.” So they no longer wanted to do things by halves. Starting Wednesday, a “lockdown for all,” said the CSU president. “The philosophy is: stay home!” Berlin Prime Minister Michael Müller (SPD) stressed that “things are still possible”, for example, at Christmas. “But you don’t have to do everything you can.”
By decision of the federal and state governments, grocery retailing, pickup and delivery services, pharmacies, banks and savings banks are excluded from the business closure.
Under the resolution, the strict rules for private contacts, a maximum of five people from a maximum of two households, will relax for Christmas. From December 24 to 26, gatherings with four people outside the home plus children up to the age of 14 from the closest family circle are allowed.
Nine months after the first crown closure in kindergartens and schools, most facilities will also be closed or only operated to a limited extent throughout Germany. Merkel and the prime minister agreed that schoolchildren and kindergarten children should stay home for three and a half weeks no later than Wednesday.
In view of the spread of the corona pandemic, a national ban on attendance and gatherings in Germany will apply on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Eve. Also, the sale of fireworks before New Year’s Eve is generally prohibited.
20,200 new corona infections
In one day, German health authorities sent 20,200 new corona infections to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI). That comes from the Sunday morning numbers. The peak was reached on Friday with 29,875 reported cases. The number of cases registered is usually lower on Sundays, in part because fewer tests are conducted on weekends. Last Sunday the figure was 17,767, Berlin. Health authorities also reported 321 new deaths in one day. The previous high of 598 deaths was also reached on Friday. The number of daily deaths has tended to rise recently, which was expected after the sharp increase in new infections. The total number of people who died with or with a proven Sars-CoV-2 infection increased to 21,787.
In total, the Robert Koch Institute has counted 1,320,716 infections detected with Sars-CoV-2 in Germany since the beginning of the pandemic (until December 13, 00:00). Around 967,900 people are estimated to have recovered.
According to RKI’s management report on Friday, the national seven-day R value was 1.11 (previous day: 1.03). This means that, in theory, 100 infected people infect 111 more people. The value represents the onset of the infection eight to 16 days ago. If it is below 1 for a long time, the infection rate decreases.
Night curfew announced for Bavaria
In view of the drastic increase in crown numbers, Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) has announced strict night-out restrictions for the entire Free State. So far, a 9:00 pm to 5:00 am curfew has been implemented at critical points with an incidence of more than 200; since the country is now above this value overall, it will now be done “for all of Bavaria,” Söder said on Sunday after phone inquiries from Federal and state in Berlin.
