Actor and comedian Jerry Stiller died at the age of 92. Her son Ben Stiller announced this on Monday. Jerry Stiller began his career in the 1950s, four decades later he played the nervous hysterical Frank Costanza on the television show “Seinfeld”. Stiller is best known to Austrian audiences as “Arthur” from the “King of Queens” series.

Stiller also wrote an autobiography titled “Married to Laughter” about the marriage of more than 50 years to his “soul mate” and comedy colleague Anne Meara, who died in 2015. Stiller was nominated for an Emmy for his later role in “Seinfeld” in 1997. In an interview in 2005, Stiller recalled that he was unemployed and was not the first choice for the role of Frank Costanza in “Seinfeld”. “My manager had retired,” he said. “I was almost 70 years old and had nowhere to go.” But then he began to revive his career with the role of the exaggerated father or father-in-law Arthur along with Kevin James and Leah Rimini in the popular international comedy “King of Queens”.
Stiller was often described as much calmer and more thoughtful than his movie and series characters suggested. As the son of a bus driver and a housewife, Stiller grew up in Brooklyn during the Great Depression. His inspiration to enter the world of entertainment came at the age of eight when his father took him to a program of the Marx Brothers.
After serving in World War II, Stiller earned a degree in theater studies from Syracuse University and then left for New York to begin his career. Stiller married Meara in 1953. The couple lived on the Upper West Side of Manhattan for many years and raised two children: their daughter Amy, who became an actress, and their son Ben, author, director, and actor in films like “Mad about Mary” and “Mine Novia, her father and me”. Father and son also appeared together in the short film “Shoeshine”, which was nominated for an Oscar in its category in 1988.
