15 demos paralyze Vienna

More than 500 people are expected to take the demo train from Praterstern to Rathausplatz alone.

Despite the crown pandemic, May 1 in Vienna will not be without outdoor gatherings. The 15 assemblies reported to the State Police Directorate, at a safe distance, are held today. The largest number of participants is expected on a demonstration train from Praterstern to Rathausplatz.

Several critical groups of capitalism and the government call this meeting. Solidarity is required for all those “who suffered the patriarchal capitalist system even before the Corona crisis,” says a statement on the platform on May. One “would not let the mouth forbid it despite the mask.”

Police spokesman Paul Eidenberger said at least 500 participants are expected to be present in the town hall square for the final evening rally. The meeting point is at 12 p.m. at the Praterstern. In their appeal to interested parties, the organizers point out that one should appear masked for the demonstration and keep a safe distance there.

That is also the key to holding all the meetings. “The respective scoreboard is responsible for ensuring that the meeting is held within the legal framework,” said Eidenberger of the APA. “The 15 applicants have assured us or the authority of the assembly that they will take care of it.” Finally, the police will intervene on site if the distance of one meter is not guaranteed. “In the worst case, we have to solve it,” said Eidenberger.

Up to 250 people are expected to gather at the Federal Chancellery for the evidence-based Corona Information Initiative (ICI) (starting at 10 a.m.). This group had already called a rally at Albertinaplatz last week, which took place despite the police ban, but ultimately resolved it for violations. There was also an arrest and various notices.

Also at 10 a.m., the May meeting of the “Self-Determined Austria” personal committee begins, which is led by many social scientists and trade unionists, however, at the Rathausplatz. In addition, there are some smaller gatherings, which Eidenberger says have been registered for 10 to 15 people each. The spatial focus is in any case in the city center, where there could also be considerable delays in traffic. The ring will be partially blocked for the big demonstration at noon, and there will be no easy progress on alternative routes.

Therefore, the police strongly advise against going to the city by car. “But we have no experience,” said Eidenberger. Exit restrictions that have been in place since mid-March will no longer be in effect on Friday, which is one reason why it is impossible to estimate how many people will be traveling. The weather shouldn’t be a big booty for outdoor activities – the rain should fade in the morning and the cloud cover should start to relax.
