After the terrorist attack in Vienna, the investigations are still in full swing. As Karl Nehammer explained, there have been 15 arrests.
After the attack in Vienna, there were numerous house searches. 14 arrests were confirmed Tuesday afternoon and now one more person has been added. All of the suspects are in custody, eight of whom had a prior conviction.
Four for terrorist offenses, two for violent offenses (resistance to state violence, serious bodily injury, coercion) and two for attempted honor killing in Linz. One of them was sentenced to ten years in prison in 2012 and released in 2017, the other was sentenced to five years and six months for contributing to deliberate bodily harm and was released in 2015.
Radical Islamist scene
All of the suspects are between 16 and 28 years old, have a migrant background and some are not Austrian citizens. They are all “well known for belonging to the radical Islamist scene”, as authorities say.
All the mosques visited that can be assigned to the Salafi scene. Among those arrested is a man who tried to travel to Syria together with the attacker in 2018. The two had been arrested and detained in Turkey.
An 18-year-old boy from Bangladesh, who was being investigated by a terrorist organization at the time of the attack, was also arrested.
Another detained person also wanted to travel to Syria in 2015. The then 16-year-old was traveling with his “wife” and other jihadists with Balkan roots. He was arrested and later sentenced, reports “Der Standard”.
One suspect is said to be the son of the woman with whom the rental car was registered, with whom the later killer went to Slovakia in July 2020 to buy ammunition.
The youngest suspect is only 16 years old
All those arrested are young men. The youngest of them is only 16 years old. Seven of the detainees are native Austrians with a migrant background. Two were born in Kosovo, two in Chechnya, and one suspect in Bangladesh. They all lived in Vienna or St. Pölten, a suspect in Linz.
It is currently being determined how close contact the detainees are with each other. Two of the detainees attended the same school in St. Pölten and many played football at a club. The police are now checking whether the people are “accomplices” or “at least participated in attack plans.” It is the presumption of innocence.
Working with the FBI
Also in Switzerland, two people believed to be related to the attack were arrested. You were in contact with the killer and met him, “Today” reported. According to Nehammer, the investigations are “far from over.”
The Interior Minister highlighted the good cooperation with the authorities of international partners. There is also “intensive” cooperation with the FBI.
