The number of new infections each day has reached a record in the Czech Republic: 1,164 cases were added on Tuesday, the Ministry of Health announced. Meanwhile, it is again mandatory to wear a mask in public transport throughout the country, in Prague also in shops and shopping centers. The previous maximum number of new infections in 24 hours was just under 800.
In Italy, too, the number of newly infected with the corona virus increased again in 24 hours. From Tuesday to Wednesday, 1,434 new infections were reported, after 1,370 the previous day. 14 people died within 24 hours of being infected with SARS-CoV-2.
The total number of active cases in the Czech Republic has now increased to around 9,300. There have been 441 deaths to date with a total number of active cases now standing at around 9,300. So far, 441 deaths have been linked to Covid 19 disease, it was announced Wednesday. The World Health Organization (WHO) had already described the recent increase as “worrisome” the day before.
Health Minister Adam Vojtech announced on Twitter that a mask requirement will be introduced “in all inland areas of the Czech Republic” from Thursday. Details should be announced later in the day.
“We call on all citizens to take maximum responsibility and to adhere to basic hygiene standards,” wrote the 33-year-old ANO party minister. Vojtech’s announcement received criticism on social media. Prime Minister Andrej Babis was accused of having declared only in June that there would be no more measures at the national level in the future. A crown traffic light should allow for limited regional adjustment.
According to epidemiologist and government adviser Roman Prymula, the new measures, such as the mask requirement, will only be noticed after a delay of several weeks. “We have to work in such a way that it does not reach an exponential increase,” said the expert from the daily “Pravo”. According to observers, the latest increase is likely also related to the end of the summer holidays and the return of many vacationers. One of the most popular travel destinations for Czechs is traditionally Croatia, where crown numbers have also increased recently.
Also in Israel, the number of new corona infections continues to rise. As announced by the Ministry of Health on Wednesday, 3,496 new cases were registered the previous day. For the second day in a row, the highest value in a day was recorded in the country since the beginning of the pandemic. There were 3,425 new cases on Monday.
However, the number of corona tests is also significantly higher than before, on Tuesday there were 43,199. On Tuesday night, the Health Ministry announced that Corona Commissioner Ronni Gamzu, Health Minister Yuli Edelstein, and six other high-ranking employees would have to go into Corona quarantine. He was in contact with a crown patient.
Night curfews went into effect Tuesday night in 40 particularly affected towns. From 7 pm to 5 am (local time), people cannot be more than 500 meters from their homes. Only the purchase of food and medicine and visits to the doctor are allowed. Non-essential trading is prohibited during this time.
The schools in the 40 towns have also been closed. Strictly religious Arab and Jewish places of residence are particularly affected by the high number of corona infections. Families with many children often live there, often in small apartments in tight spaces. Therefore, it is particularly difficult to keep your distance or isolate yourself in areas.
The pandemic in Israel initially ran smoothly, also due to strict government policy. However, after a rapid slowdown in May, the number of cases skyrocketed. Israel is also part of the group of “pioneers” in Austria, whose heads of government met in various videoconferences. In addition to Israel, this group also includes the Czech Republic, which also announced an all-time record for new infections every day on Wednesday.
The SARS-CoV-2 pathogen has been detected in 138,719 people in Israel since the pandemic began. 1,040 people died after a corona infection. The country has around nine million inhabitants.
Fearing a second corona wave, gatherings with more than six people are banned in England until further notice. So far, 30 people have been allowed to meet. The new upper limit should apply from next Monday. It affects meetings on its own four walls and in public spaces, British Health Minister Matt Hancock said on Wednesday.
Exceptions will apply for households with more than six people, as well as for meetings with professional backgrounds or for training purposes, for example in schools. Weddings, funerals, and some sports are also exempt from the stricter rules.
