The current number of coronavirus cases in Austria remained at the high level of the previous week the day before Christmas. The Interior and Health Ministry reported 2,131 new infections and 114 more deaths in 24 hours on Wednesday. So far 5,654 infected people have died in this country. However, the slight decrease in the number of hospital patients continued. 2,775 affected people remained hospitalized, 472 of them in intensive care units.

That’s 147 fewer hospital patients than the day before and a decrease of 635 people in one week. For those infected in intensive treatment, the occupation decreased by 15 compared to the previous day and by 76 in the last seven days.

However, during the last week, there have also been 890 deaths from coronavirus. However, there was a late registration after the data cleanup of the number of victims in Vienna, so on December 17 the record number of 218 deaths per crown in one day was reported in Austria.

The 2,131 new infections announced Wednesday morning is also a high value, as the average for the past seven days is less than 2,002. However, overall, the seven-day incidence (number of new cases) per 100,000 population dropped to 157.4 (previous day: 163.4).

Burgenland reports the fewest new infections within 24 hours with 49. In Carinthia there were 165, in Lower Austria 289, in Upper Austria 346 and in Salzburg 210. Styria registered 366 positive testers, Tyrol 200, Vorarlberg 140 and Vienna also 366 .

So far there have been 344,357 positive results in Austria. 312,921 have already survived the disease. With 3,326 new recoveries, the number of active cases fell by 1,309 to 25,782 people. In Austria, 3,682,136 tests have been carried out since the start of the pandemic. In the past 24 hours, 38,440 PCR tests were reported, of which 5.5 percent were positive.

Meanwhile, the number of people in Vienna who died with a coronavirus infection increased to more than 1,000. Specifically, the number of deaths related to the virus is now 1,007, 16 more than the previous day. The crisis team announced Wednesday.
