On Monday, more restrictions will take effect in Austria to prevent the spread of SARS-CoV-2. For indoor events that are not professionally organized and without assigned and marked seating, only ten people are allowed.

As the Ministry of Health makes clear on its website, the term event is interpreted narrowly for leisure activities. The ten-person limit basically applies to “group social activities” that take place in closed rooms. It includes “specially planned meetings and activities for entertainment, fun, training, and physical and mental edification.”

Funerals excluded from the renewed hardening of the crown

Therefore, smaller cultural and sporting and leisure events that only offer space to stand and no safety concept should be limited to ten instead of the above 50 people. This applies to yoga classes, Zumba lessons, card rounds, and game nights, for example. The same applies to weddings, film screenings, exhibitions, vernissages, congresses, training courses and higher education without any compelling professional need. The only exceptions are funerals.

Rescue and fire service organizations are not affected in their training and continuing education to the extent that they should have taken preventive measures and precautions against the spread of the coronavirus in their training centers long ago. They are also required to conduct fixed seat training courses and appoint a Covid-19 officer.

3,000 people allowed in professional outdoor events

Starting Monday, a maximum of 100 people applies to group leisure activities. For professional events with a safety concept and fixed seats, the limit increases to 3,000 people, indoors to a maximum of 1,500. If the minimum distance of one meter cannot be maintained and there are no other protective devices, such as plexiglass edging, mouth and nose protection should also be worn on the seat. People who live in the same household are exempt from the distance rule.

For events with more than 200 people, it is mandatory to appoint a Covid-19 officer and develop and implement a corresponding prevention concept. Indoor events with more than 500 people generally require official approval. For outdoor events, this limit is 750 people.

General requirement of mask in fairs, markets and sports facilities

All trade and public fairs must be approved by the authorities and also need a Covid 19 officer, a prevention concept, and trained employees. Regardless of whether the fair takes place outdoors or in a closed hall, an MNS mask must be worn, even if the distance of one meter can be maintained. The same is true in markets. In the case of conferences or seminars at trade shows, visitors should be restricted to the limits provided for the events.

There is also a general requirement to wear a mask in indoor sports facilities, both for staff and clients. The protection of the mouth and nose can only be removed when playing sports. In fitness studios that are exempt from the ten-person rule, it must be used between individual equipment stations or training areas.

In hobby sports, the ten-person limit does not apply to team sports where more than ten athletes are required to play. In soccer, basketball or ice hockey, the players of both teams are not included in the maximum number of participants. In these cases, the allowed number of participants is “limited by the number of players required by the respective sport”, emphasizes the Ministry of Health.

In general, upper personal limits do not apply to professional sport or the professional field. Construction workers, who often work in tight spaces, don’t have to count how many colleagues are next to them. Artists are saved the same, for example, in theater or orchestra rehearsals.
