Austin Peay coach Mark Hudspeth resigns after 11-win season

Austin Peay football coach Mark Hudspeth, who led the show to a record 11 wins and an Ohio Valley Conference championship last season, abruptly resigned on Friday.

In a university statement, Hudspeth mentioned the need to spend more time with his family and said he would return to training “at the right time.”

Hudspeth, 51, spent just one season at Austin Peay, leading the show to his first postseason appearance and earning OVC Coach of the Year honors. He spent the previous seven seasons in Louisiana.

Current training personnel will be retained, but a replacement for Hudspeth was not named. The team will begin organized practices on July 31.

“This was not an easy decision, but a very personal one,” Hudspeth said in a statement. “I need to take some time out of the game with Tyla and the kids. I couldn’t be more grateful for my time at Austin Peay and I’ll be a fan forever. I will incredibly miss the players and coaches and never forget their commitment to each other and this team. I’ll be training again in the future at the right time. “

In a statement, Austin Peay sports director Gerald Harrison thanked Hudspeth for his work and for taking the program “to new heights.”

“We will immediately work to determine our next steps to take advantage of the momentum that Mark built,” he said.
