Aurora Protest: Shot after car passes by Black Lives Matter protesters in Colorado

A car collided with a crowd of Black Lives Matter protesters protesting systemic racism and police brutality, and one protester was shot in Colorado.

The Aurora Police Department said the protester who was shot was rushed to the hospital in stable condition, adding that a protester fired a weapon that hit at least one person.

Protesters were walking down Interstate 225 in the Aurora suburb of Denver on Saturday when a vehicle passed through the crowd, police said.

Authorities said the vehicle was towed and are investigating.

Protesters also smashed court windows and an office fire started, police said, with protesters ordered to leave after an illegal assembly was declared.

Tensions have escalated in recent protests against racial injustice after federal agents were dispatched to quell protests in Portland, Oregon.

Thousands of protesters gathered outside Portland federal court in the early hours of Saturday.

Protests against police brutality have spread worldwide after the death of May 25, George Floyd, a black man in Minnesota who died after a white officer held him to the ground with one knee to his neck.

In Colorado, protesters have been drawing attention to the death of Elijah McClain, a 23-year-old black man who was detained by police while walking down an Aurora street in August 2019 after a 911 call denounced him as suspect.

The police placed him in a stranglehold and paramedics administered 500 milligrams of ketamine, a sedative, to calm him.

McClain suffered cardiac arrest, then was declared brain dead and life support was removed.

His death has become a rallying point, as outrage at police brutality and racism in the United States has increased in recent weeks.
