Audeze’s new Penrose gaming headphones are made for PS5 and Xbox Series X

Audeze has a new gaming headset called Penrose, which will cost $ 299.99 when it launches in September, but the company is taking $ 50 from it if you pre-order it.

Audeze is doing two different versions. The former has a blue outline on the headphones and is compatible with PS5, PS4, Windows 10 and macOS. The other model has green accents and works with Microsoft consoles, Xbox Series X and the current Xbox One line, as well as Windows PCs.

Despite the fact that there is a separate model for Xbox, an Audeze spokesperson told me that the headphones are exactly the same; It is the included dongle which is different. One is compatible with Microsoft’s wireless protocol, while the other is not. Any of the dongles will work when connected to the Nintendo Switch dock.

The dongle and color aside, both models coincide in terms of features and ports. The Penrose has a detachable articulated microphone, a 3.5mm headphone jack, a USB-C port for charging, and separate volume knobs for the microphone and headphones. In addition to connecting to your game console or PC via a 2.4GHz connection, the headset supports Bluetooth 5.0 (SBC and AAC codes) for use with your phone or tablet. Audeze says it can run both wireless modes simultaneously, so in addition to in-game audio, your friend chat or podcast can also go through the headphones. That’s great.

Audeze built the Penrose with its 100mm flat magnetic drivers. This type of driver can lead to surprising sound quality in more expensive headphones, but we will reserve judgment on these until we test them. Former Edge Headset expert Vlad Savov wasn’t overly impressed with the Audeze Mobius headphone drivers that were released in 2018, though Audeze remixed its performance for the better in a collaboration with HyperX on the Cloud Orbit headphones. The Penrose does not feature 3D audio or head tracking that made the Mobius unique. But if it’s based on performance, Audeze could have some fantastic gaming headsets that are ready for the next generation of consoles.
